Kyle Millsap is an international award-winning artist and Associate Professor of Trumpet & Jazz at Texas A&M University-Kingsville. Along with overseeing the trumpet program, Dr. Millsap directs Jazz Band II, the TAMUK Trumpet Ensemble, the Jazz Trumpet Ensembles, and performs with the Kingsville Brass Quintet.

His playing has been hailed as having “superb style, [a] gorgeous sound, and masterful intonation.” (ITG) He has had the opportunity to perform with a diverse array of artists and ensembles across the musical spectrum. Orchestral credits include the Memphis Symphony Orchestra (TN), Orquesta Sinfonica UANL (Monterrey, MX), Victoria Symphony Orchestra (TX), Corpus Christi Symphony Orchestra (TX), Wichita Symphony Orchestra (KS), and Ballet Memphis (TN). In the jazz and commercial music realms he has performed with artists including Doc Severinsen, Vince DiMartino, The Temptations, Mannheim Steamroller, Il Divo, Johnny Mathis, the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra, Al Kapone, multiple events for Elvis Presley Enterprises, and at halftime for the NBA's Memphis Grizzlies. Theater credits include performances for numerous national touring companies.

He has performed and/or given presentations at the International Trumpet Guild Conference, International Horn Symposium, College Music Society and National Association of College Wind and Percussion Instructors national conferences, and the Texas and Tennessee Music Educators Association conventions, in addition to masterclasses and recitals throughout the United States and Europe. His pedagogical articles and music reviews are published in the ITG Journal and NACWPI Journal. He also serves on the Editorial Committee of Trompete, the journal of the Associação Brasileira de Trompetistas.

Through his career, he has commissioned and premiered several new works for trumpet. Among them are: Shalom, Salaam, Peace… (2010) written for two trumpets and organ, Scatter the Darkness (2011) for trumpet and organ and A Whisper of Angels (2012) for trumpet quartet and narrator, 2x4: Domestic Tranquility (2013) for trumpet and flugelhorn duet, Cuando las ranas crien pelo (2014) for trumpet sextet, Murmurations (2015) for two trumpets and electronics, and Divertimento in Blue (2017) for jazz trumpet quintet, The Secret Menu of El Tapatio (2018) for jazz trumpet quintet, and Sequence Six (2019) for jazz trumpet sextet. In 2018, he released his debut album Scatter the Darkness, which features several of these commissions, received a silver medal in the Global Music Awards, and was commended for "consistently displaying a strong musical interpretation and technical execution of Friedman's works." (ITG) His own compositions and arrangements have been published through Brass Arts Unlimited, Cimarron Music, and Triplo Press. Additional recording credits include principal trumpet with the Memphis Repertory Orchestra on their recordings Dvorak & Tchaikovsky and Voyagers, and as lead trumpet on the Southern Comfort Jazz Orchestra recording Voices.
His students have been accepted into the nation’s top graduate programs and gone on to successful careers as performers and music educators, teaching at all levels of primary, secondary, and university music programs.

Dr. Millsap holds the Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Memphis, Master of Music degree from the University of North Texas, and Bachelor of Music degree from Wichita State University.

He is a Yamaha Performing Artist.

MRS. MELISSA MILLSAP

Melissa Millsap currently serves on the faculty of Texas A&M University-Kingsville as Lecturer of Trumpet where she teaches studio trumpet, co-directs the TAMUK Trumpet Ensemble, and is a member of the Kingsville Brass Quintet, the professional brass ensemble in residence at TAMUK.

Mrs. Millsap has performed with a variety of groups, including the Memphis Symphony Orchestra, Louisville Orchestra, Delta Symphony Orchestra, Memphis Repertory Orchestra, the Eroica Ensemble, and the Memphis Jazz Orchestra. She has performed at the International Trumpet Guild Conference (2017 & 2018), Texas Music Educators Association Convention (2018), International Horn Symposium (2013), and at the World Association of Symphonic Bands and Ensembles (2007) in Killarney, Ireland as a member of the International Youth Wind Orchestra. She has performed for professional musical productions of All Shook Up, Beauty and the Beast, Curtains, The Drowsy Chaperone, Grey Gardens, Hello Dolly, Les Miserables, Narnia, Peter Pan, and Pippin. She has been heard as a performer on WKNO’s Live Lunch series in Memphis, TN and on WUOL in Louisville, KY.

Mrs. Millsap has premiered and commissioned new works for trumpet, including Shalom, Salaam, Peace… (2010), Scatter the Darkness (2011), A Whisper of Angels (2012), and 2x4: Domestic Tranquility (2013). Her performance of these works is featured with her husband on their album Scatter the Darkness: New Music for Trumpet by Stanley Friedman. Additional recording credits include Jazz Nocturne: American Concertos of the Jazz Age, released on the Naxos label, and the Memphis Repertory Orchestra's recordings Dvorak & Tchaikovsky and Voyagers.

She is on the Artist Faculty of the National Trumpet Competition. She graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree in Trumpet Performance from Webster University in St. Louis, Missouri, and received her Master of Music degree in Trumpet Performance from the University of Louisville. Her primary teachers have included Dr. Lee Weimer, Malcolm McDuffee, Dr. Stanley Friedman, Ryan Anthony, Scott Moore and Dr. Michael Tunnell.

Mrs. Millsap is an artist for Conn-Selmer performing on Bach trumpets.

Kingsville Brass Quintet

The Kingsville Brass Quintet is the professional brass ensemble-in-residence at Texas A&M University-Kingsville's Department of Music.

The Kingsville Brass Quintet is made up of distinguished faculty members that bring a wide range of performing experience to the ensemble. With performances in the Kingsville area, Texas, and around the US, the KBQ has developed a reputation for outstanding artistic concert presentations. The mission of the group is to expose and educate students and audiences to varied repertoire that includes Renaissance and Baroque transcriptions, jazz arrangements, as well as contemporary works for brass quintet. Along with their concerts, the group regularly presents clinics and masterclasses to students of all levels. The members are Dr. Kyle Millsap and Mrs. Melissa Millsap, trumpets; Dr. Jennifer Sholtis, horn; Dr. Oscar Diaz, trombone and Dr. Jesse Orth, tuba.
